Raul Peralez is a committed public servant with specific interests in education, public safety, and public policy. He has a unique set of professional and leadership experiences and specific strengths in public speaking, critical thinking, and problem-solving. As a police officer, educator, and elected official, Raul understands the importance of public policy, public safety, and investing in the development of our youth. He is an active resident and has dedicated countless hours to volunteering and giving back to his community. Raul served 8 years as the elected City Council representative for the District 3 (Downtown) area of San José. In his elected capacity he served as chair of the Public Safety, Finance and Strategic Support Committee and as a board member for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority and the Association of Bay Area Governments. Prior to taking office, he served for 8 years as a full-time San José police officer, and he continued to serve as a reserve officer while in office. He has also served on his neighborhood association, as an appointed Commissioner to the County Human Relations Commission, and an appointed delegate to the CA State Democratic Party. Raul has most recently returned to full time service as a San José police officer. Raul was a big brother with the Big Brothers-Big Sisters and assisted and mentored homeless youth as a volunteer with Stand Up For Kids. He was also a longtime volunteer at Silicon Valley FACES Camp Everytown and regularly volunteered at local schools and other non-profit organizations. Prior to becoming an officer, Raul worked as a substitute high school and alternative education teacher, involving work with students in the juvenile justice system. He worked with the charter high schools of the Mexican American Community Services Agency, as a counselor at El Portal Leadership Academy, a substitute teacher at Academia Calmecac, and a recruiter for both schools during the summer. During this time, Raul also worked part-time as an EMT at the HP Pavilion (now SAP Center). Raul graduated from Cupertino High School and attended San José State University on academic scholarships. He earned a degree in Mathematics becoming the first in his family to graduate from college. He currently lives with his wife and two children in the Luna Park Neighborhood of San José.
