I am the team principle and founder of Baca Architects – which is specialized in architecture, urban planning and research related to living, working and recreation on water. Our work promotes a paradigm shift in thinking by “making space for water” within developments rather than trying to hold it out through traditional defences alone. Working in collaboration with regulatory bodies, local authorities, developers and privateers – Our approach has demonstrated that this approach can be cost effective whilst improving the safety and quality of life for many. Our practice has delivered many firsts: a flood resilient policy for the London Borough of Sutton, robust planning principles for DEFRA, planning permissions for large and small developments and the UK’s first amphibious and building regulations compliant floating homes. I am also a member of the RIBA’s Policy Team and supports DEFRA’s Core Cities Flood Advisory Group at No.10 Downing Street. Publications: 'Aquatecture: Buildings and Cities designed to live and work with water' . Consisting of circa 57,000 words with over 500 illustrations the book brings together all our findings and recommendations from our work for the World bank, Defra, Technology Strategy Board, EA plus commercial clients at a strategic level of city design through a range of scales, down to individual dwellings. I’m also a keen illustrator and amateur painter.
