I am the Co-Head of Hybrid Equity, a business unit within Old Mutual Alternative Investments (OMAI). We are one of South Africa’s most established alternatives fund managers investing in mezzanine debt, preference shares, and quasi equity. My current role is to oversee the investment process, strategic direction and operational running of the Hybrid Equity business. The business has recently reach first close on its first fund, having secured seed funding from an initial investor. We are currently fundraising with the aim of reaching final close on this first fund. In addition to this fund, I also currently co-manage an existing portfolio of mezzanine/preference share investments for Old Mutual. Hybrid Equity is a subset of mezzanine finance which focuses on higher risk adjusted return investments, these include traditional mezzanine debt, preference shares, equity finance and quasi-equity investments. Hybrid equity investments as an asset class provides investors with a flexible alternative to the traditional fixed income and private equity investment models giving investors a well-balanced attractive risk-adjusted return. In addition to assuming responsibility for the overall Hybrid Equity programme, I’m actively involved in all investment decision-making processes and I retain portfolio responsibility for key investments. Prior to joining OMAI, I was part of OMSFIN (Old Mutual Specialised Finance) Exco and co-head of the asset origination team at OMSFIN, where I had the responsibility for overseeing the principal investments, as well as traditional debt origination teams. While at OMSFIN, I conceptualized, launched, and successfully grew the principal investment portfolio into a significant part of the overall OMSFIN business. I’m currently a member of OMAI’s EXCO and Hybrid Equity Investment Committee. I have over 18 years of financial services and investments experience and this experience spans across the entire capital structure, investing in senior debt, mezzanine finance, quasi equity and ordinary equity investments. I completed a year of academic articles at the University of Cape Town (UCT), and then served the rest of my articles at PwC (Cape Town) and qualified as Chartered Accountant in South Africa in 2005. My academic qualifications include a BBuscSc (Finance, Statistics) and H Dip in tax law from UCT.
