Kayrros is the world’s foremost earth observation platform and a top enabler of climate action through groundbreaking technologies such as Methane Watch, which uses input from several satellite fleets to continuously track and measure large methane emissions worldwide and attribute them back to their sources. I spent the last 25 years dealing daily with energy data in government, academe, publishing, consulting, on Wall Street and at the International Energy Agency. I co-founded Kayrros when I became concerned with the gaps, delays and inaccuracies in traditional ways of collecting statistics on the oil and gas market and became aware of the huge potential of new sources of information embedded in satellites, the IoT, geolocation devices and social media. Today Kayrros realtime data have made oil and gas markets more transparent, make it easier and faster to arbitrage market imbalances, help improve the safety and efficiency of all kinds of industrial operations and reduce operating costs. We monitor crude inventories, oil and gas demand and energy production in realtime and track greenhouse gas emissions and carbon capture. We also monitor linear infrastructure such as pipelines and high-voltage power lines and provide key input into a myriad other industrial processes from waste management and power generation to electric vehicles and energy-intensive industries like cement and steel. I believe that accurate and timely measurements are key to addressing climate change. As management guru Peter Drucker famously said, “If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it.” This applies to GHG as much as anything else. Lack of reliable data had long hampered climate policy and kept emissions rising five years after COP21. I’m proud Kayrros can change that for good and help the energy sector shrink its climate footprint and bend the curve. I hope it will!
