Bio

Dr. Bhavani Thuraisingham is the Founders Chair Professor of Computer Science and the Founder of the Cyber Security Research and Education Institute (CSI) at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and served as its Executive Director from 2004 until 2021. She currently directs the Cyber Operations efforts at CSI, a Senior Strategist in Cyber Security and Data Science, and a Co-Director of the Women in Cyber Security and Data Science Centers at UTD. She is also a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at Kings College London, and was a New America Policy Fellow 2017-8. She is an elected Fellow of several prominent organizations including the ACM, IEEE, the AAAS, NAI and BCS. She has received prestigious awards in cyber security including the IEEE Computer Society's (CS)1997 Technical Achievement Award for “outstanding and innovative contributions to secure data management”, the 2010 ACM SIGSAC Outstanding Contributions Award for seminal research contributions and leadership in data and applications security”, IEEE Communications Society's 2019 Technical Recognition Award for Communications and Information Security, IEEE CS Technical Committee on Services Computing 2017 Research Innovation Award, and a 2013 IBM Faculty Award. She has unique experience working in the commercial industry (Honeywell), federal research laboratory (MITRE), US government (NSF) and academia and her 42 year career includes research and product development, technology transfer, program management, and consulting. Her work has resulted in 130+ journal and 300+ conference papers, 200+ keynote/featured addresses, over 120 panel presentations, 16 books (authored), and 7 US patents. She has given talks at multiple high profile events including those organized by Fortune Media, Dell Technologies World, Lloyd's of London, and the United Nations. She is a STEM mentor to women and underrepresented minority communities and has given talks at WiCyS, WiDS, SWE, WITI, CRA-W, CyberW, iMentor, and Maryam Mirzakhani Celebrations for Women in Mathematics. Her outreach activities resulted in her receiving the 2021 IEEE Cyber Security Cloud Conference's Special Recognition Award for her contributions to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
