Expert on formal and automated verification, concurrent systems, cryptographic protocols and computer security. Author of many books, papers and patents on these topics. Head of Oxford University Computer Science Dept 2003-14. Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering, Academia Europaea and other learned organisations. Currently researching into blockchain and applications of trusted computing (enclaves): Digital Civilisation and mainstream, ethical use of blockchain. Fundamentals of blockchain: trust models and green consensus protocols. The transparency centre: folding program analysis and verification, plus compilation into enclaves to achieve mutual trust. Other current research: delay encryption and (with Iothic Ltd) IoT security.
