Bryan Hoffman leads the Distributed Energy Operations and Maintenance (DEOM) Team at Duke Energy. The DEOM Team is part of the Distributed Energy Group (DEG) in the Customer Delivery (Distribution) Department. The purpose of DEOM is to manage the safe Operation & Maintenance of Distributed Energy Resources (DER’s) including Battery Sites, Microgrids, and Solar Facilities. DEOM consists of 4 major functions; Design Engineering, Control Systems, Operations, and Maintenance and currently has projects in construction and/or operation within all Duke Energy jurisdictions. The DEOM Team supports all regulated renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) with 100+ facilities anticipated to be on-line in the next 5 years. A brief summary of each DEOM Team function: 1 - Design Engineering DEOM owns the design engineering function that supports the initiation, development, design, execution, commissioning, testing, operations, and maintenance of DER’s. Engineering is critical to the overall success of the Energy Storage Program and to the efficiency of the entire project lifecycle. 2 - Control Systems DEOM developed an Energy Storage Control System (ESCS) for all new distributed energy resources. The ESCS is a critical element of the broader Duke Energy strategy to own, operate, and integrate distributed energy technologies into its’ regulated electric utility business. This control system allows Duke Energy to optimize the operations of batteries and solar assets and dispatch them as part of a diverse distributed energy portfolio. 3 - Distributed Energy Operations DEOM currently operates numerous distributed energy resources across all Duke Energy jurisdictions. The Distributed Energy Operations Center (DGOC) is staffed with Operators who can monitor, control, and analyze DER assets along with the ability to troubleshoot potential issues or alarms within each site. 4 - Distributed Energy Maintenance DEOM owns the maintenance function for regulated distributed energy storage assets across all Duke Energy jurisdictions. A comprehensive Energy Storage Program Maintenance Strategy has been developed to consolidate agreements and gain synergies across multiple resources. This strategy helps lower rates for each site, creates consistency across jurisdictions, and allows DEOM to focus on managing fewer resources. DEOM is central to the long-term success of the Customer Delivery Energy Storage Program and plays a vital role in the obtainment of Duke Energy’s carbon reduction goals.
