'Specialization is for insects.'' One of my favorite quotes, it speaks to a major problem in technology today: we are a world of specialists. Do you remember the story of the seven blind mice and the elephant? Like the blind mice in Ed Young's children's book, each group of technology subject matter experts believes they understand their world (''It's a pillar!'' ''It's a fan!''), but without communicating with the other blind mice, they can't see the big picture. They have no idea that they are interacting with different parts of the same system - the elephant. Securing an environment in 2022 requires an understanding of the whole system: the applications, the network, the hardware, the hypervisor, authentication, and the behavior of end users. Security is a job for generalists. After all, ''Knowing in part may make a fine tale, but wisdom comes from seeing the whole.''
