Bio

With over a decade of experience in the data centre sector providing a collective voice for operators, I'm known for my industry knowledge, commitment and persistence. I've worked on a multitude of complex and long term dossiers and am dedicated to ensuring that this critical sector is both sustainable and resilient. For many years I managed the UK Council of Data Centre Operators and was the conduit between government and the data centre industry and I delivered a number of significant policy outcomes for the sector. These included a Centre Climate Change Agreement (which to date has delivered over 30% improvement in infrastructure efficiency), key worker status, protection for construction sites and quarantine exemption for data centre staff and contractors during COVID-19 and reforms to regulations that were unduly burdensome. I am proud to have been elected to the Board of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact and appointed to the Infrastructure Masons Advisory Committee in 2021 and to assist on several international judging panels. During my journey I have produced a wide range of published work including thought leadership, industry reports, formal and informal policy responses, position statements, white papers, briefings and illustrated infographics explaining complex technologies in laymans' terms. Publications include: ''Data Centre Energy Demand: The Viking Helmet'', ''Does Streaming Really Have a Dirty Secret?'', ''The UK Data Centre Sector: The Most Important Industry You've Never Heard Of'', ''Data Centre Energy Routemap'', ''Lost in Migration: Attributing Carbon to Cloud'', ''Ten Myths About Data Centres'', ''NOX: Implications for Data Centres'', ''Securing our Digital Future: Construction Challenges and Opportunities'', ''Animal, Vegetable or Mineral? FAQs for Planners'', “Cones of Pain: Generator Emissions Compliance Roadmap”, “Silver Linings: The Implications of Brexit for the UK Data Centre Sector” and “Evaluating the Carbon Impact of ICT: the Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything”. I wrote a suite of explanatory material including “Data Centres: Engines of Growth”, “Data Centres: a Day in YOUR Life”, “So What Have Data Centres Ever Done For Us?”, “Data Centre Business Models: The Sherry Trifle” and “Er, what IS a Data Centre?” and also authored the first sector position on climate change: “High Tech: Low Carbon” in 2008. The opinions expressed in my Linked in posts and communications are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of any third parties with whom I am associated.
