Dr. Frank Munz works as a Principal Technical Marketing Engineer at Databricks after kickstarting DevRel EMEA. Previously, Frank built up technical evangelism for Amazon Web Services in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Frank’s focus is on Cloud strategies, Machine Learning, cloud-native/containers, big & fast & non-relational data and High-Performance Computing. With over 22 years of professional experience in distributed systems, Java Enterprise, microservices, SOA, and cloud computing, Frank has published 17 scientific articles in computer science and brain research as well as three computer science textbooks with some of them used by lecturers of US universities. He trained keynote speakers for events with up to 3.500 attendees from many verticals including clinical research, pharmacy and genomics. Frank still presents regularly at conferences all over the world such as Devoxx, Java One, JConf, Voxxed Days, Code One, and KubeCon. His prolific global and cross-industry experience in IT was awarded the Technologist of the Year Award for Cloud Computing and nominated as an independently working Oracle ACE Director. 2017 he was nominated as one of the first Developer Champions worldwide. Frank holds a Ph.D. with summa cum laude (1,0) in computer science from the Technische Universität München where he spent 4 years in supercomputing and distributed systems. He developed distributed functional algorithms for human brain research, cardiology and oncology. Frank sold his first computer program (a kind of mini e-business suite) with 16 years. After having jobs as a furniture mover in Paris he was hired as a data scientist at the German Cancer Research Center with the team of Prof. zur Hausen. The study Frank worked on won the Nobel prize in medicine for linking a human virus (HPV) to the development of cancer. The vaccine in use today saves over 30k people in the US from developing cancer. Just recently Frank unlocked his goal to present at major conferences on every continent except Antarctica (because it is so cold there). He enjoys writing about himself in the third person.
