When I was 5, I wanted to be a hot dog vendor on the corner of 30th and 2nd avenue. I scouted the perfect location - at the tip of a small triangle, which no longer exists. Then, it separated the 4 lane avenue from a 2 lane divide where cars could park for retail shopping. As I saw it, cars could park and grab a dirty water dog or taxis could quickly stop at red lights and grab a dog on the go. A green light meant go, just enough time to collect the cash. There was also a playground with hungry-worn-out kids and huge residential buildings whose inhabitants would all naturally need to eat. The 5 year old me had a plan. Efficiency and speed to keep up with varied and high demand... and a passion for hot dogs. As my mom tells it, each year I grew as did my dream. By the age of 8 my dream became an empire of hot dogs, shish kebabs, knishes, pretzels, roasted chestnuts and of course soft drinks to wash it all down, as friends dreamed of being president or a firefighter. As to the highest yielding sellers, I never would find out -- I still wonder at times. My service may have changed, but I live my 5 year old dream.
