Glyn Hughes entered Britannia Royal Naval College as a Short Career Commission Seaman Officer in 1990. He initially joined the surface fleet serving in both major and minor war vessels, but spent the majority of his sea time serving in submarines. His final appointment was at the MoD as a Staff Officer in the Defence Export Services Organisation. Retiring from the RN at the end of 1997 he joined the Sales and Marketing team within GEC Marconi’s Missile Division. In 2000 he moved to the newly formed BAE Systems in a Business Development role. Between 2002 and 2008 he specialised in Campaign Management and was given responsibility for winning a number of sales campaigns in the UK, some being more successful than others! In November 2007 he was appointed as Director, UK Government Relations and joined a small Head Office team responsible for managing the relationship between the UK Government and the company’s senior executives. This period included the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review. Between 2011/12, he attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in London and on completion returned to the company’s Group Business Development function in the post of Director, Western Europe; a role in which he supported all lines of business in developing new opportunities across Western Europe. In early 2015 he was re-appointed as Director, UK Government Relations for a second tour within the Department and in advance of the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review. Glyn holds a Master’s degree in International Security and Strategy from KCL. Glyn is married to Helen and they live in Dorset with their two young children, Sam and Amy. He enjoys the outdoors and can often be found frustrated on the golf course.
