As a student at St. Francis Xavier University in the BASc Health program, I have spent the past three years discussing the importance of considering all aspects of health, including the social determinants of health. This program emphasizes interdisciplinary work by encouraging students within the program to take a wide range of classes, including history, biology, sociology, psychology and many others. Through this opportunity to expand my knowledge in a variety of fields, I have been able to develop a range of skills, including research, writing, and communication skills. The past year has also presented opportunities to learn more about policy and the policy process through classes, with the class resulting in a final policy brief project. In addition to my required coursework, I began working on the research project which will form the basis of my honours thesis. This project will be examining the medieval conceptions of fertility as described in Arabic and Latin texts. Upon my graduation, I hope to pursue additional education in the field of public health and health promotion.
