Bio

Hannah Russell is Chief Executive at the British Science Association, an organisation dedicated to making science more relevant, representative and connected to society. A senior leader in STEM education, engagement and professional development, Hannah has over 15 years’ experience across the sector. Having originally trained as a secondary science teacher, Hannah joined Wellcome in 2003 as an education manager, working on several major projects across primary and secondary science and public engagement. After taking a short career break to look after her young children, Hannah then joined EngTechNow, a Gatsby Foundation funded programme to support engineering apprentices and technicians, before joining the Biochemical Society in 2015, initially as Head of Education, Training and Policy and later Director of Society Programmes. Prior to her current role Hannah spent three years as Chief Executive at the Association for Science Education, where she led the team in their mission to support excellence in the teaching and learning of science. This included significantly increasing the Association’s turnover and focus on diversity and inclusion, introducing major new programmes such as the Department for Education-funded Inclusion in Schools Programme and Wolfson Foundation funded Keeping Science Practical programme as well as leading the Association’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
