I’m passionate about energy transitions on islands. My research focuses on community microgrids as a possible technology and business solution to tackle the challenges of islands in their just energy transition pathway. By focusing my research on the Orkney Islands and Canary Islands, I learn from different island contexts. I believe that a combination of technologies and energy flexibility is the key to decarbonisation, providing attractive opportunities for investors and the island community. In my research, I adopt the perspective of these two stakeholder groups A) as private investments are crucial to support local energy transitions by covering the high up-front costs, B) and the engagement and participation of the communities are pivotal to an environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable community microgrid.
