Bio

James Crabtree is executive director of the Institute of International Strategic Studies, based in Singapore. Prior to joining IISS James was a faculty member at the Lee Kuan Kew School, Asia's leading school of public policy. His book ''The Billionaire Raj: A Journey Through India's New Gilded Age'', published in 2018, was an Amazon book of the year and short-listed for that year's FT / McKinsey business book award. Prior to moving to Singapore, James worked for much of the last decade for the Financial Times, where he was both Mumbai bureau chief and Opinion Editor. He is now a columnist for Nikkei Asia, Foreign Policy and the Straits Times , and has written for publications from The New York Times and the Guardian to Foreign Policy and Wired. Earlier in his career he worked as a senior advisor in the UK Prime Minister's Strategy Unit, under Prime Ministers Gordon Brown and Tony Blair. He was educated at Harvard and the LSE.
