As Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Brand New School, I am proud of my team's work making the company a creative force in visual storytelling and design. We are a modern creative company that always has, and continues, to operate a little differently. I studied design at the California Institute of the Arts where I learned from a legendary team of design practitioners, educators, and students. While in school, I interned in the design department at Sony Music, designed graphics for Stussy, and interned at Fuel for two years. Upon graduating from CalArts, I served as an Art Director at Fuel, and then a Design Director. I was afforded a front-row seat to how the industry operated, which influenced what I thought could be improved upon. One year later, Fuel was acquired by Razorfish. This transformation proved too disruptive for a 23-year-old creative idealist, and I ventured to start Brand New School. Naturally, some questioned if it was the right time for me to make such a decision. However, I saw a real thirst from my clients for what I brought to the table, namely an avant-garde approach to graphic design in motion. I started Brand New School by hiring friends, who were all designers and animators, and I operated it by placing a great emphasis on research, design, and, most importantly, learning. It had the openness of a classroom critique and welcomed fresh ideas, which informed our first few years of business. Our work represented a new school of design, and our approach was borne from a new school of thought, thus our namesake. We were pioneering an industry that didn’t exist while creating a new studio model where diverse design ideas are conceived, designed, and produced. Today, Brand New School has grown considerably, constantly reinventing itself and charting a course into new territories. We look at a brand’s problem through an intellectual lens, as our goal is to offer an approach that reinvents and reimagines possibilities.
