I am the Dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine, as well as a professor of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and a professor of Bioengineering and of Neurobiology, by courtesy, at Stanford University. Since becoming dean in 2012, I’ve worked to establish a strategic vision for Stanford Medicine to lead the biomedical revolution in Precision Health. The next generation of health care, Precision Health is focused on keeping people healthy and providing care that is tailored to individuals. It’s predictive, proactive, preemptive, personalized, and patient-centered. In keeping with this, I’ve led the development and implementation of a new model for cancer research and patient care delivery, and also launched an initiative in biomedical data science to harness the power of big data. Stanford Medicine is also collaborating with Verily (formerly Google Life Sciences) to collect anonymous genetic and molecular information to create what will be the most complete picture of a healthy human being. I’m a passionate advocate for innovation and have provided significant support for fundamental science and for clinical and translational research at Stanford. Through bold initiatives in medical education and increased support for PhD students, I’m committed to inspiring and training future leaders. Before coming to Stanford, I was provost and SVP for academic affairs of Johns Hopkins University. Previously, I served as the Andelot Professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins. I have special expertise in balance and inner ear disorders, with more than 140 published articles and chapters. One of my proudest professional moments was my discovery of superior canal dehiscence syndrome, a debilitating disorder characterized by sound- or pressure-induced dizziness.
