Bio

Quick note for recruiters etc: Open to hearing about top-tier IC roles or intriguing projects. Likes: Building; educating; social good; travel; playing with shiny things. Dislikes: Gambling/fintech/other forms of evil. In the uncanny valley between Full-Stack Developer, Cloud Solution Architect and Application Modernisation Consultant. Awarded Microsoft MVP status for technical knowledge and community status. Put simply, I'll help you to build solutions that take advantage of modern cloud architectures. Over 30 years of commercial experience, including a decade of building almost exclusively on Azure PaaS services with reactive front-ends, plus a healthy dose of DevOps. Also a speaker and trainer. Some things I do (in no particular order): * Azure consultancy - Helping teams get the most out of the new application architectures that make the most of cloud computing * .NET development - Expert since inception. Core team emeritus on DNN, the largest .NET open source project at the time * Web - Fan of JAMstack and React * iOS, Android, Windows and Mac apps (Xamarin/MAUI) * Conference organiser, international speaker and ex-MCT (have delivered in-person and recorded training days for Microsoft on app modernisation, cloud-native and AI) Current weapons of choice are: * Server(less): .NET Core (C#/F#), Python and Node.js where appropriate * Data: Cosmos DB, Azure SQL, Azure storage * Client: React, Xamarin/MAUI * DevOps: GitHub, Azure DevOps I started programming with BASIC on an ICL 1900 series mainframe in 1976 or thereabouts and was first paid for my efforts in the 1980s. Since then I've written stuff in Forth, Pascal, Modula 2, COBOL, Fortran, PL/M, C, C++, Java, Javascript, SQL, PHP, VB, C#, F#, Python, four flavours of assembly language and probably a couple of other languages as well. During that time I've worked in just about every corner of development - mainframes to mobiles, assembly language to functional programming, Access to NoSQL, desktop to cloud, device drivers to websites. And I'm still learning. I always try to keep ahead of the game, so my first commercial website was live when NCSA Mosaic was the browser of choice, I used early betas of .NET, and now I design and build serverless cloud solutions. My superpower is learning so quickly you don't realise I didn't already know it.
