Bio

I'm Head of Architecture, within the BBC, for many of the online (digital) Products department. This includes the websites and apps for BBC News, Sport, Weather, Children's, Education and Content Discovery services. Major achievements:

• As one of the BBC’s most senior technology leaders, have designed, led and delivered multiple wide-reaching programmes of work, including those requiring substantial technology, process, and cultural change across several teams.
• Led the rebuild of BBC Online, moving to the cloud and allowing the closure of two data-centres. The project involved over 300 people (across engineering, product, design, delivery, and stakeholders), and over 1 million lines of code. It successfully hit an ambitions deadline (end-2020). Multiple sites (including the biggest, BBC News) were migrated across with zero down-time, whilst continuing to serve tens of millions of users per day.
• Shaped, designed, and delivered much of the BBC’s online live events coverage (including huge events such as the UK General Election or Olympic Games). Created a flexible live event service that can reliably handle millions of users concurrently, working with video, audio and text across multiple platforms.
• 15 years of high-performance team management (mostly engineering and architecture); and numerous projects related to recruiting, retaining, and growing teams (from student placement schemes to internal training programmes).
• Multiple cloud (AWS) innovations, involving big data, scaling for millions of users, real-time data processing, personalisation, serverless, and more. Several external speaking events in cloud technology, including at AWS re:Invent; and a winner in the 2017 AWS DeepLens Hackathon.
• Dozens of other successful projects at the BBC, involving multi-disciplinary teams and a wide range of technologies; and all involving high levels of creativity, collaboration, and engineering quality.
