“Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious.”-Stephen Hawking My dad logically nicknamed me Curious George: questions became actions as I conducted experiments. My home was STEM before it was a buzzword. Dad was a programmer/database analyst and mom was a nurse practitioner running a neuro-oncology clinic. Experiments were encouraged, although the third new microwave was strategically placed after a CD ''study'' went awry. Collaboration and curiosity are connected. Eyes on the Solar System from Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) shared beautifully visualized stellar data. After a demo, sparkling with curiosity, I asked the presenter to collaborate at an upcoming Space Conference and an ongoing NASA partnership formed. Asking JPL’s software engineer to co-present involved taking a risk. I had curiosity, an idea, and passion and yet I could have failed. To embolden myself, I asked “What’s the worst that could happen?” Generally, I’m not afraid to try something new or ask someone to collaborate. Cybersecurity and programming both connect to my commitment to continual growth and perseverance. In programming, we fail all the time - in fact, we learn by getting errors and pushing past them. Enriching growth, pushing through failure, and success achieved after debugging are why I’ll spend time learning from code and refactoring it. The security of our devices: personal, work, IoT, and IIoT is paramount. Current and future cyberattacks demonstrate this. Mitigating threats is one of many reasons I strive to improve through learning and sharing what I’ve learned through research, publications, and talks. I'm particularly passionate about cloud security, OT, threat intel, and cyber research with mitigations. You may see me debugging an EOL error or at a SANS Summit or at a WiCyS (Women in CyberSecurity) meeting or an OWASP event - no matter where - I'm learning and be certain I’ll be analyzing ways to share too. Mentoring and leading - I give back to others. My learning, volunteering, and projects demonstrate my values. I’m still Curious George, and I’ll always ask questions – but I’ll probably not microwave another CD – I’d have to find one anyways!
