I did the struggling artist thing in my 20s: cartoonist, TV writer, playwright. My work was staged, broadcast or published at the Royal Court Theatre, on BBC and ITV, and by Marvel Comics, 2000AD, The Guardian and TES. And I wrote half a musical with a Beatle. I did the corporate freelancer thing though my 30s: screenwriter, speechwriter, copywriter, creative, director for agencies and corporate clients including VW, Audi, Boots and Canon. I wrote everything from the Carphone Warehouse interactive corporate panto to the first 45 words broadcast on Absolute Radio. I didn’t do the creative agency thing until my 40s: writing, and then strategy, once I found out that was a thing. Exploring big ideas that connect with audiences for brands like Post Office, Legal and General, Baxi and Refresco. And when you write it all down, it can sound a kind of ass-backwards, odd way to shape a career. But here we are.
