Mulugeta Russom is a pharmacist, pharmacoepidemiologist, and pharmacovigilance specialist with more than 10-year experience in medical products regulation, health systems strengthening, project management, strategic planning, program review, and building a full-fledged pharmacovigilance system from scratch. Advisor to the WHO/HQ on Medicines Safety and COVID-19 therapeutics, and Team lead of Working Group B of the WHO member states mechanism for combating substandard and falsified medical products. Other areas of expertise/experience include: post-market surveillance, investigation of AEFIs and product quality defects, benefit-risk assessment, evaluation of implementation problems, quality management systems, and formulation of institutional development plans. Mulugeta is an experienced medical writer, associate editor, reviewer/editorial board member in several international journals, and a well-versed researcher published 45+ scientific articles in peer-reviewed international journals and four books in a local language. He member of a dozen of international professional societies, medicines regulatory services regulatory sciences and pharmacovigilance consultant, and pharmacovigilance systems as well as an international trainer in signal detection and management. With his leadership, the Eritrean Pharmacovigilance Centre is currently recognized as one of the top performing countries in Africa and beyond. Mulugeta is an energetic, enthusiastic and disciplined young scholar with extensive experience in resources management (time, personnel, knowledge, data, office, etc) and outstanding leadership qualities. Currently, he is completing his PhD in pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology. Mulugeta has got the 2022 Pharmacovigilance Fellowship Award for his significant contribution in the science and practices of pharmacovigilance.
