I never used to know my career existed. “Architectural lighting design” isn’t like law, or medicine, or accountancy – the kinds of jobs you get told about at school. And it isn’t like football, or rocket science, or pop stardom – which you dream about as a child. Architectural lighting design is the passion I discovered at university, while training as a set designer. I loved being able to create atmospheric spaces using nothing but light, and I soon realised that I could achieve the same effect in the real world rather than a stage set: I could light up spaces and affect the emotions of all who entered it. I’ve worked in this industry for 20 years now, and in 2011 I set up Nulty Lighting. We’re an award-winning practice with one simple mission: to delight, excite and inspire people with our creations. Whether we’re working on a restaurant, a luxury home, a hotel or a public square, we believe that how a place feels is just as important as how it looks. The company has grown from one person to 3 different brands, employing 50+ people across 5 offices, and our clients include Selfridges, News Corp, KPMG, Victoria Beckham, Hakkasan, Somerset House and London Underground. I’m exceptionally proud of my team and everything we’ve achieved together, and I’m excited about all the special spaces we’ll be lighting up in future.
