I have worked in the Renewable Energy Sector since graduating from my Master's degree in engineering in 2009 and during my placement year at Garrad Hassan prior to that. Until 2016, the majority of my work was in offshore wind, providing consultancy services for a wide range of clients including project developers, owners, investors and a number of other stakeholders, with a particular focus on operations and maintenance (O&M). More recently I have focused on battery storage projects, mostly in the GB and Island of Ireland markets. Energy storage is unique from renewables in that there are multiple different ways in which the asset can be used and the revenues it can access, with the revenue strategy changing on ever shorter timescales. Couple this with the complexities of battery degradation (itself a variable), grid requirements, fire risk mitigations, bespoke control and measurement systems and energy storage is a complex and highly dynamic area of development, which keeps me on my toes! I am first and foremost a practical person and gain great satisfaction from projects which involve design, construction, maintenance, logistics or technical management. I regularly visit storage sites (and formerly offshore and onshore wind projects) as part of my work and firmly believe that practical experience during construction, commissioning and operation of plant is key to developing a full understanding of both the successes and pitfalls of these projects. I am fully certified for first aid, offshore work and working at heights.
