Andrew is Professor of Management Practice at the London Business School and was its Dean from 2008 to 2017. As an executive, he has run a textile plant in Germany and has started his own business. In the public service he worked in the UK Cabinet Office, spent 11 years in the Treasury (the UK Finance Ministry) and advised House of Commons Select Committees on public spending. He is former President of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and is currently the Senior Independent National Director of Times Newspaper Holdings Ltd. Andrew is currently working on how to identify and improve judgment. This includes judgment in leadership, the professions, in management (including the Board, selection, and the use of artificial intelligence) and in everyday life (including career choice and difficult choices for Young Adults, particularly 17-18-year olds). An article last year in Harvard Business Review “The elements of good judgment; How to improve your decision making” (January/February 2020) gives the outline of the framework he has developed. Other publications have included a booklet “The 12 elements of independent judgment for a UK Board and its Committees” (Chartered Governance Institute July 2021) and a number of financial applications, including “Improving professional judgement in audit” (Economia website November 2019), “6 elements of professional judgement” (Financial Management December 2019) and “Using your judgement in the new normal” (The Treasurer June 2021). He has used the judgment framework to help those exercising judgment in the Covid-19 crisis, including in: “Explaining policy judgments in Covid-19 times” (Forbes online 03 April 2020); ”Making tough choices in the Coronavirus crisis” (Financial Management website April 2020); “Besser entcheiden in der Corona-Krise” (Harvard Business Manager May 2020)''How to exercise judgement during a pandemic” (CEO Middle East May 2020)''How to exercise your judgment in a pandemic” (Project July 2020) and “6 questions for compensation committees on Covid-19 choices'' (Agenda July 2020).
