Suzanne Y. Kao, Esq. leads the global export controls practice at Deloitte. As its Global Export Controls Leader, she primarily focuses on advising a wide range of industries, such as aerospace, defense and high technology, on U.S. export controls and compliance, including jurisdictional classifications; technology transfers, strategic licensing, obtaining and administering export authorizations from the U.S. Government, including the U.S. Departments of State, Commerce and Office of Foreign Asset Controls; aiding clients with interpreting and complying with U.S. regulations that limit exports of encryption commodities, software and technologies; assisting U.S. companies and their foreign subsidiaries to understand the requirements for conducting business with countries subject to U.S. sanctions and embargoes; identifying, reviewing and voluntarily disclosing potential violations of the U.S. export laws; conducting export compliance assessments, compliance audits, and investigations; designing and implementing export compliance programs; providing guidance and solutions to remedial measures for compliance; creating and conducting customized export compliance training; and conducting export control due diligence related to M & A, and divestitures and assessing potential compliance risks and liabilities associated with such transactions. Prior to joining Deloitte, she was the founding member of an international trade law firm in Washington, DC, where she counseled clients in the regulatory areas involving the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, Export Administration Regulations, Office of Foreign Assets Controls Regulations, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Regulations, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
