I lead the Data & Analytics team at Rail Delivery Group, currently comprised of 9 people spread across data analysis, data engineering and data science roles. The data analysts provide data expertise to other business areas such as Marketing, and large technical projects such as Fares Reform. The data engineers manage RDG’s data platform which includes a data lake, data warehouse, data pipelines and external APIs. The data scientists build machine learning models to solve business problems. Automation is at the heart of what we do, with DataOps as our guiding methodology. I’m responsible for both setting and delivering against the organisation’s data strategy, and ensuring our work complements wider industry strategies. I like to be hands-on with data, and enjoy spending a day or two each week delivering data engineering work myself. As well as managing the Data & Analytics team, I also lead the Data Sharing work package on the cross-industry Smarter Information Programme. Before joining RDG I worked at North Highland, a global management consultancy. Projects included data engineering and data visualisation for a shopping centre, a hotel chain and two rail companies, data strategy at a rail company and a large book publisher, and business analysis roles at a Big Four supermarket, a global telecommunications company, a financial regulator and a medical research institute. I joined as an Analyst before being promoted to Consultant and then Senior Consultant. Prior to North Highland, I studied Computer Science with Business at University of Bath including a 12 month placement at IBM working for local government and defence clients.
