'Everyone designs who devises courses of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones.'' - Herb Simon We live our days instinctively designing the world we live in - in small and large ways. We do this whether we are ''designers,'' engineers, artists or data scientists - whether we are parents, siblings, leaders or friends - whether we are wealthy or poor, nerdy or conventional. It's one of the reasons I love working at Autodesk - it's employees are as diverse as it's customers. Everyone here strives to make the world into a ''preferred situtation'' - and help our customers do the same. Over the last 20 years, I've worked as a leader in design. Leading teams that deliver products that satisfy and delight customers. But I've learned that leading in design is leading more than your team of interaction designers or researchers or visual designers - it's leading the entire team to think through problems in a way that helps everyone get pointed in the right direction with an eye towards innovation. I teach design thinking workshops (from LUMA) to achieve this, but more importantly, it's living the values of design thinking every day.
